E.ON Innovation project Simris nominated for Handelsblatt Energy Award
10 February, 2020

E.ON’s project Simris selected as one of top three projects at this year’s Handelsblatt Energy Award, Smart City category.
The project in the village of Simris in the Swedish province Skåne is the first local, de-centralized energy system in Sweden. Combining local Photo Voltaic (PV) and wind parks in Simris with smart energy control and distribution systems, E.ON’s Innovation team created an intelligent system that provides the local community with stable and up to 100% renewable energy.
The Handelsblatt Energy Awards jury was impressed with the way E.ON’s Innovation Team tackled the main challenge of the project, namely, balancing the fluctuations in solar and wind energy generation within the autonomous system so that everyone in Simris could rely on a stable and high quality power supply. The project also succeeded in involving the community, turning energy customers in Simris into flexible and smart prosumers.

About 150 households in Simris now get their energy from wind turbines (660 kW installed capacity) and PV modules (440 kW installed capacity), supported by two battery systems. The Simris energy system is capable of supplying the entire community autonomously, if necessary, even off the grid. E.ON’s project proves that given the right technology, entirely renewable energy systems aren’t just a vision for the future, but a real option for today.
With the annual Energy Awards, now in their seventh year, Handelsblatt and their partners in industry and media honor businesses and individuals for their innovative concepts and projects that contribute to the energy revolution. The awards are given out in the categories Industry, Mobility, Smart Cities, Startup, and Energizer of the Year. According to Energy Awards Chairman and Handelsblatt Senior Editor Hans-Jürgen Jakobs, the award nominees and finalists represent the cream of the crop in energy innovation and serve as a reliable indicator of the latest industry trends.
Alongside Simris project, E.ON was proud to see the success of Enerthing - this year’s winner in the startup category. The company, that developed photovoltaic technology for IoT devices powered by indoor light, has been cooperating with E.ON since September 2019.
