NESOI launches funding opportunity for sustainable energy solutions on EU islands

Over 3 million Euros available to support innovative energy transition projects

There are around 2400 inhabited islands in the EU. Despite having access to renewable sources of energy, such as wind, solar and wave energy, many of them depend on expensive fossil fuel imports for their energy supply.

In May 2017 a "Political Declaration on Clean Energy For EU Islands" was signed in recognition that islands and island regions have a particular set of characteristics due to their specific geographic and climatic conditions. The European islands have the potential to become innovation leaders in the clean energy transition. And yet, most of them still face challenges in transforming their long-term sustainability ambitions into a credible set of actions.

To support local authorities and legal private entities on islands, the European Islands Facility NESOI (New Energy Solutions Optimised for Islands) has set a mission to drive the energy transition in EU islands. It aims to support the creation of Energy Investment Plans for innovative projects on at least 60 islands by providing cascaded EU funding of a total of 3,120,000 Euros. With the successfully created projects, NESOI seeks to mobilise more than 100 million Euros from external investors. A funding of this scope can significantly contribute to reducing CO2 and GHG emissions as well as decreasing energy costs, which impact all citizens across Europe.

Through their hands-on approach, NESOI supports islands in getting the necessary technical and financial capacity for the effective implementation of islands’ energy transition plans. Eligible projects under NESOI funding will include the development of low carbon vehicles, retrofitting of buildings, co-generation plants, electricity generation and distribution, energy storage, deployment of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, industrial heat production, electricity production from renewable energy sources and more.

E.ON Innovation is one of the 10 NESOI project partners, who are helping to deliver such solutions for islands. The specific task of E.ON team is supporting partners and island communities with technical assistance, when it comes to project planning and implementation.

"In NESOI project islands that engage innovative solutions to become more sustainable are well supported by the EU. This is a great chance and we want to contribute to it by helping islands with the best solutions for their decarbonised future.", says Luis Hernandez, Head of Energy Communities and Networks at E.ON Innovation.

During a course of one year, E.ON has identified the most suitable and feasible business models and technologies for islands based on their regulatory frameworks and geographical locations. In the upcoming two years, the focus will lay on the coordination and deployment of technical assistance for network impact of new technologies.

The NESOI project presents an exciting opportunity to tackle climate change by working alongside the islands on decarbonisation initiatives. This will help islands to become drivers of the European energy transition, as they are prime locations for the commercial realisation of innovative energy solutions.

The call for applications for EU islands is opened until 18th December 2020. More information and application can be found under www.nesoi.eu.
