Innovation gains a central position under the roof of E.ON

Innovation has found a new home within the E.ON Group. In the context of the innogy acquisition, E.ON created a new entity that will identify and validate innovative solutions and drive partnerships. E.ON Innovation is a groupwide innovation platform that will evaluate the latest developments in the energy sector. Combining internal innovation, external partnerships and research & technology, E.ON Innovation will strengthen the E.ON Group´s engagement with other innovative and global companies, startups, universities, institutions and thought leaders.

The objective of this 360-degree approach is to firmly establish E.ON as a pioneer in the sustainable transformation of the energy landscape. The new innovation entity will be headquartered in Essen and run offices in Europe’s startup hub Berlin, as well as in Tel Aviv, Israel, and the Silicon Valley, United States.

In a comprehensive innovation ecosystem, promising developments will be identified, tested and then implemented by E.ON Innovation in collaboration with E.ON business units. “We are convinced that in the future innovative technologies and new business models will increasingly come from cross-sector cooperation and open partnerships," says Kerstin Eichmann, Vice President Partnerships & Acceleration.

The overall aim is to bring innovative products to market more quickly and to scale them up. In addition, E.ON Innovation will continue to strengthen its university cooperations, in particular its long-standing partnership with the E.ON Energy Research Center at RWTH Aachen. The role of the Research Center is that of an innovation engine that helps identify trends early on and accelerate implementation processes in order to create a decentral, digital, and, most importantly, carbon-free energy world.

The digitization in all areas of life and work, combined with the use of new technologies, dissolves traditional boundaries between industries. In this development, there is a perspective for growth. “New business models and the demand for tailor-made customer solutions open up the opportunity for the energy industry to influence other segments. To this end, E.ON Innovation has defined four areas of innovation: Industry Automation and Electrification, Energy Communities and Networks, Networked Mobility, and Connected Life,” says Mark Ritzmann, Vice President Innovation Domains.

As one of Europe's largest energy companies, E.ON is well-positioned to drive the energy transformation. With the four focus areas of the new innovation entities, the E.ON Group transcends the traditional role of an energy supplier and opens up new business areas against the background of sector coupling: industry, transportation, buildings and infrastructure. E.ON's innovative solutions will help set industries of different sectors on a green growth path. Thomas Birr, Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, stresses the significance of sustainability and climate protection, particularly in times of corona: “Driving the energy transformation continues to be essential – to this end, an innovation-based corporate strategy is indispensable.”
