Fast charging park in Duisburg passes stress tests

A joint project of E.ON Innovation, innogy eMobility solutions GmbH moves to the next stage
While buying zero-emission, fume-free electric vehicles (EVs) make particular sense in cities as means of sustainably improving urban air quality, car drivers often have no means of charging their e-vehicles at home. A joint project of E.ON Innovation, innogy eMobility solutions GmbH and municipal utility Stadtwerke Duisburg tackles this challenge with their ultra-fast charging park.
The innovative solution in Duisburg combines fast-charging stations with a solar roof and a battery energy storage system. The location near the motorway junction in the immediate vicinity of the A42 and A59 is ideal for transit traffic and city dwellers with no dedicated electric vehicles car park.
The integrated battery energy storage significantly minimises pressure on the grid. It buffers peak load periods, when several vehicles are fast charging on full power at the same time. The battery storage also maximises the supply of local solar power, which means this forward-looking electric fuel station can at times operate almost off-grid. Optimised interaction of all components and intelligent energy management ensures the most efficient operation.
With its intelligent energy management system, the Duisburg charging park incorporates four fast-charging DC (Direct Current) stations, each with 150 kW at their disposal, two AC (Alternating Current) charging stations with 2 x 22 kW each, a battery storage system with a capacity of 210 kWh and a solar roof with an annual output of 26,000 kWh of green electricity – this is equivalent to more than 150,000 kilometers driven. This project enables clean, emission-free mobility for people living within this densely populated urban area.
One and a half year after the launch of Duisburg fast charging park, EVs have recharged there over 3,600 times, drawing down a total of 80,000 kilowatt hours of clean, green power for environmentally friendly mobility. This would be enough for VW E-Golf to drive around 470,600 kilometers. The solar roof of the station alone contributed by around 210,000 km of driving range towards that total.
Following the first successful year of operation, the system has now been subjected to various stress tests. “We can charge electric vehicles at all charging points simultaneously on full throttle without overloading the power grid. This means the charging park is ideally geared for the new, fast-charging EVs”, says Lioudmila Simon, Head of Networked Mobility at E.ON Innovation. “The station combines innovative fast-charging infrastructure with renewable energy generation, modern storage technology and a high degree of grid compatibility. With this forward-thinking project, we are utilizing tomorrow’s infrastructure today.”
The stress tests certainly put the energy management system through its paces. During the examination, it was tested how the fast chargers respond when the battery is empty, all vehicles are charging simultaneously and the grid power output is exceeded. The aim was to check whether the high-performance chargers switch off one after another to avoid overloading the grid – and the test delivered precisely the desired result.
If switching off the fast chargers does not ensure the necessary grid stability, the entire charging park is meant to come off the grid. That test also went according to plan. When the battery is empty and all vehicles were connected at the same time, first the fast chargers, then the entire charging station moved into standby mode.
The final test was designed to test the ability of the battery storage system to support the grid. Here too the desired result was achieved. The charging station takes the load off the grid – as the battery storage system compensates for the amount of charging output that cannot be drawn from the grid connection. All vehicles recharged without a hitch.
The Duisburg charging park brings mobility sector one step closer to a sustainable future of transportation making the E-Mobility transition efficient, convenient and cost-effective. This project shows how a fast charging EV station of the future looks like without creating any bottlenecks for the grid. The next step is to use the battery at the site to provide a more flexible service. This flexibility will make the charging park more attractive for the operator by facilitating additional revenue streams.
