Precondition to utilize the earth‘s heat potential are wells to reach thermal water beneath the earth‘s surface: One well to pump up hot water (production well) and the reinjection well to pump down the water after the heat utilization.
Once the hot thermal water reaches the surface via the production well, it is led to a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger transfers the heat of thermal water to the ORC system. The heat is then used in the ORC process to produce green electricity. To complete the thermal process, the cooled water is pumped down again via the reinjection well.
The utilization of ORC systems for geothermal plants is very flexible and can be combined with a thermal use of the heat as well. You can use thermal overcapacity during summer months to produce electricity. Alternatively, the partial heat capacity for ORC can be used until you reach the temperature level required for the thermal use in applications such as district heating or green houses.
Generally, there are two types of drillings for a geothermal power plant: Near-surface drillings (up to 400m) and deep geothermal (from 400 up to about 8.000m). Particularly, deep geothermal drillings can reach a high temperature level (in some cases more then 150 °C), which is very attractive for electricity generation with ORC. Even at a temperature of 80 °C thermal water can be used for electricity generation.
Power from geothermal power plants is recognised as very sustainable technology as there are no fossil fuels needed. By increasing geothermal power generation, significant CO2 savings can be achieved. The major advantage of geothermal energy compared to other sustainable energy sources is the continuous availability. This is especially beneficial when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing.
Due to the high sustainability of geothermal energy, many European governments offer funding schemes. For example in Germany the geothermal power generation is supported by an attractive feed-in tariff (Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz).
