Not quite final call

With takeoffs and landings almost every minute and currently serving about 22 million passengers a year, it’s hard to imagine that one day it will be "final call" at Berlin’s Tegel airport. Its closure will kick-off one of the largest urban development projects in Europe and at its location on approximately 500 hectares, the Urban Tech Republic and Schumacher Quartier will be built. The energy concept for Berlin TXL will be realized by Berliner Stadtwerke and E.ON. It will become a home for more than 10,000 people and a place where about 20,000 will work.

High efficiency project with LowEx network


40 degrees Celsius in the winter, 20 degrees in the summer: what at first sounds unspectacular is in fact a very smart and sustainable solution for local heating networks which up until now very few had on their radar.

The difference between a classic district heating network and a low-temperature or low-Ex network is as follows: Because supply temperature in buildings with a local heating network is so low, it can be used to directly supply underfloor or wall heating systems as well as air conditioning systems - without the usual distribution losses. This concept saves energy and money. And should higher or lower temperatures be needed for local heating, heat can be supplied by renewable sources via decentral heat pumps and cooling systems.

Tegel as a hub: generating and trading energy

Energy spans a broad field: It was important to the planners of the Berlin Tegel and Schuhmacher Quarter project to develop an integrated energy concept for supplying heat in which every form of energy can be integrated in a modular and flexible way into the overall concept. In concrete terms, this means that in addition to the "South" and "East" generation plants with highly efficient heat pumps, combined heat and power plants and near-surface or deep geothermal energy among other things, there will be many possibilities for individual energy generation and feeding into the local heating network. Thus, users become prosumers – consumers and producers alike – while the network intelligently balances the need for heat and cold. The result: Through shared use of all energy in the quarter, the total energy required for the heat supply is reduced.
