Laras' success story

Lara Piesch - Consultant

How did you get to know E.ON Inhouse Consulting?

During an intensive off-site event on the North Sea island of Pellworm! Within three days we explored the energy self-sufficient island, learned a lot about various technologies regarding “renewables” and solved a case study on the topic of solar energy. A special interview trainings prepared me for my later Recruiting Day and we had plenty of time and opportunities to ask the consultants about entering the company and working at E.ON Inhouse Consulting. I was impressed by the open and relaxed atmosphere that gave me an authentic insight into the company’s culture.

What was the next step after the event?

An invitation to the Recruiting Day! One week after the event I got individual feedback from one consultant on my performance during the workshop and directly received an invitation to the Recruiting Day in Essen. To better prepare for my interviews another consultant called me and provided useful hints on the interviews so that I successfully made it through the day and got an offer for an internship. For 9 weeks I supported the project E-Mobility – “Ultra Fast Charging” in which I closely collaborated with internal and external clients.

What characterizes an internship at E.ON Inhouse Consulting?

Personal development, an exceptional team atmosphere, and responsibility from the very first day! Especially as it was my first consulting internship I could develop new skills regarding top-down communication, structuring my daily work, and stakeholder management. Each intern has a personal “Development Leader” with whom you reflect on your individual progress in the project and regarding your soft skills. My highlights were the feedback of a client who told me at my farewell he was surprised that I was an intern “only”, and the fantastic atmosphere in the whole ECON team. I absolutely enjoyed my time with great colleagues during work and several internal events – e.g. bowling or women’s dinner. I am already looking forward to being part of the team up from December 2018 when I finally enter ECON as a Consultant!

What was an unusual team experience you have had?
Recently we took a day of as team and did a 10k scavenger hunt which included drone flying, diving, climbing, archery and much more. That was a lot of fun.

What was a recent challenge you had to overcome during your project?
Building up a digital sales and delivery structure from scratch for a B2C heating product was a real challenge. In a dynamic, startup-like environment we had to work closely with our client. Now the business is successfully running.

Do you have a hobby people would not expect you to have?
I like to be outdoors. It starts with relaxing with friends in the local park whilst slack lining and having a nice barbeque. But it also goes as far as paddling down a river in Alaska for 3 weeks without any sign of civilization and completely relying on my survival skills.

What do you most appreciate about your ECON colleagues? The team spirit and the internationality – it is great to work with smart people from all over the world.

What was a recent challenge you had to overcome during your project?
Managing 4 different project locations (Riga, Munich, Coventry and Essen) in one go.

What is your favorite place for dinner?
As I live in Düsseldorf, I really enjoy going out to one of the many amazing Sushi places (Düsseldorf has one of the largest Japanese communities in the world).

Which regular ECON event do you enjoy most?
The Summer Strategy Days, since you get to know a lot of colleagues you don’t hang out with on daily basis, since they are not on your project. The team activities are also a lot of fun.

What surprised you about consulting when you started working for ECON?
I was surprised by the level of responsibility you get from the beginning and what comes along with it (e.g. meeting executives on your own).

What are your next big plans outside of work?
I took the chance at ECON to take a leave of 5 weeks at the end of my projects. Since I love hiking, I will travel to Iceland and explore the island.

What is your favorite place for dinner?
The restaurant is called “Jagdhaus Schellenberg” and is located on the banks of the Baldeneysee lake in Essen. They have delicious food which you can enjoy on their terrace with a view right across the entire lake. It’s a must in Essen, especially in the summer!

What are your next big plans outside of work?
I am planning an awesome road trip through Thailand with my girlfriend.

Which regular ECON event do you enjoy most?
Our Strategy Days, both in summer and in winter, are always a blast. We all get together for one or two days of fun and to exchange knowledge!

What background picture does your laptop currently have? A photo of a fancy E.ON e-mobility charging station in Malmö, Sweden, with graffiti in the background. It’s a very arty Berlin-style picture!

What surprised you about consulting when you started working for ECON?
Being around young and international colleagues actually felt to me much like being back at university.

Which regular ECON event do you enjoy most?
One of the regular events I always look forward to is “ECONnecting Women”– we ECON ladies get together to have dinner with a leading female manager at E.ON. It’s always a very special atmosphere!

You are from the Ruhr region – what is special about Essen and its surroundings?
I really appreciate the great combination of its being a metropolis with everything to offer - from culture to shopping and green hideaways.

Describe an unusual team experience.
I took part in an off-site strategy retreat with the client’s team at an active monastery on a small island.

Which regular ECON event do you enjoy most?
It’s not yet become a tradition, but I enjoy sailing. So far we have organized two sailing trips with fellow ECONs and alumni.
