Support for Science
E.ON is dedicated to getting the most accomplished minds in the world involved in energy research and development. We developed a support program at group level in 2007 which will grant scholarships, award prizes for academic theses and issue research grants on a large scale over the next ten years, promoting the development of new key technologies in the energy industry.
E.ON already assigned EUR40 million to the E.ON Energy Research Center at the RWTH Aachen University in 2007. The center was established in 2006 and represents the largest cooperation between a private company and a university in Europe. Four of the five departmental chairs have been filled since 2007 and have started work.
We also launched the International E.ON Research Initiative in July 2007. Each year, grants worth EUR six million are awarded to forward-looking research projects – by 2016 the total investment will amount to EUR60 million. The research topics of the initiative change each year. In 2007, the main focus was energy storage. For 2008, the research topic is "energy applications for nanotechnology".
