Carbon Dioxide Emissions

About half the electricity E.ON generates comes from fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. This results in relatively high absolute emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a greenhouse gas.
Enterprise-Wide Climate Protection Goal
On May 31, 2007 we therefore set an ambitious enterprise-wide climate protection goal for ourselves. By the year 2030 we want to cut our specific CO2 emissions by 50% to 0.36 t/MWh compared to 1990. This will be achieved above all through extensive investments in renewable energies, targeted research and development of innovative environmentally friendly energy technologies, and the implementation of CO2-free coal power plants. Other key areas for us include an increase in power plant efficiency as well as nuclear energy.

E.ON UK and E.ON Nordic Also Have Concrete CO2 Reduction Goals
E.ON UK has also set detailed targets for CO2 reduction. By 2012 E.ON UK aims to reduce its carbon intensity by 10 percent from the 2005 figure. Measures include replacing older generating units with new, state-of-the-art units and producing more wind power.

At 0.4 million metric tons per year, E.ON Nordic’s carbon-dioxide emissions are already very low. But the company is committed to reducing them even further by preventing an aggregate 1 million metric ton of emissions by 2009 and an aggregate 4 million metric tons by 2015.

Combat Climate Change
We that think climate protection must be coordinated globally. That’s why we joined Combat Climate Change (3C) in early 2007. The purpose of 3C is to convince companies that produce or consume large quantities of energy to do more for climate protection so that global warming can be slowed dramatically by 2100. 3C’s policy recommendations include investments in energy-efficient power plants, a diverse energy mix, R&D for alternative energy technologies, and the expansion of emissions trading.

We’re also involved in a multi-industry initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development whose main purpose is to define a shared position on climate change that can also serve as guide for legislators as they craft new energy laws and policies.

Participation in U.K. Climate-Protection Initiative
In the United Kingdom we’re involved in the Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change. The purpose of the group, which consists of senior executives of major international corporations, is to advise the U.K. government on its climate-protection policy. Paul Golby, the CEO of E.ON UK, is actively involved in the initiative.

We’d like for our expertise and experience to contribute to the success of all these initiatives.
