Initiatives

Creating a sustainable society is not an issue that can be tackled by a single individual alone. In order to face future global challenges head on, the worlds of business, politics and non-governmental organizations have to work together closely. For this reason, E.ON is active in a number of social organizations.

We also made a voluntary commitment to the UN Global Compact in 2005, and since 2006 we have been a member at group level of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), which is dedicated to sustainability in companies. E.ON UK has been strongly involved in the WBSCD since its foundation in January 1995. We also have a close partnership with non-governmental organizations like the British NGO Forum for the Future. We support the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) by complying with the GRI Electric Utility Sector Supplement to develop informative and transparent reporting.

In carrying out these economic and social processes, we want to work closely with members of the Bundesverband der Energie und Wasserwirtschaft e.V (BDEW) (German Energy and Water Industry Association), World Energy Council (WEC), Eurelectric (the umbrella organization of the European electricity industry) as well as the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA).

Launching our own Initiatives – E.ON in Dialog
Our direct contact with the public is equally as important for us as dialog with the worlds of business and politics. That’s why we launched our own initiative E.ON in Dialog in 2007. Around 120 employees work as "energy experts" at events across Germany. They help keep members of the public informed about energy issues at trade fairs, answer questions and are in the unique position of being able hear the public’s concerns and thoughts first hand. As part of this initiative, the inaugural E.ON Netz Stakeholder Forum was held in July 2007 in Bayreuth. 30 representatives from the energy sector, the unions, the political sphere and management used the event as an opportunity for open dialog. The event’s central themes were incentive regulations, network expansion and market development.

In the following table you can view a selection of initiatives which we are involved in:

Initiatives
Name of institution Focus of the institution and E.ON's involvement External link
Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft e. V. (BDEW) The "Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft" (German Energy and Water Industry Association) is the first body to represent the German electricity, heating, gas, water and sewage industries. E.ON has several representatives on the BDEW Board of Management. The BDEW, the industries' central organ, is a powerful and expert point of contact for E.ON as well as politics, media, public authorities, science and society.
Eurelectric Eurelectric is an umbrella organization for the European electricity industry. As the only Europe-wide electricity body, the association is the electricity industry's representative to the institutions of the European Union. As a member, E.ON aims to play an active role in shaping the European energy market.
Forum for Sustainable Development of German Business (econsense) The Forum for Sustainable Development of German Business serves as a CR think tank and dialog platform for member companies. The focus is to strengthen corporate activities in issues relevant for the future, such as climate protection. In addition, the forum also aims to demonstrate the possibilities and boundaries of corporate responsibility as well as to promote the concept of sustainability in business. As a member, E.ON aims to strengthen its dialog with politics, business and non-governmental organizations.
Forum for the Future The British non-governmental organization Forum for the Future brings players from the worlds of business, politics and non-governmental organizations together. E.ON enjoys a close partnership with the Forum and supports it in embedding the issue of sustainable development in its dialog.
Global Compact The UN's Global Compact is aimed at making globalization socially and ecologically compatible. It operates on the basis of ten principles of responsible business which companies can commit to, as E.ON did in 2005.
Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) The Global Reporting Initiative was founded in 1997 with the aim of creating internationally recognized guidelines for sustainability reporting for companies, governments and NGOs. In order to promote comparability and transparency inside the sector, E.ON AG worked together with the GRI to produce specific criteria for reporting in the energy sector - the GRI Electric Utility Sector Supplement.
Initiativkreis Ruhrgebiet (IR) The "Initiativkreis Ruhrgebiet" is an association of around 70 companies who share the common goal of securing and promoting the future of the Ruhr area in Germany. As a member of the association, E.ON supports scientific and cultural projects which help strengthen the region.
International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) The International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) has the goal of promoting the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Through its financial contribution, E.ON aims to further improve the international emissions trading system to allow its fair, efficient and systematic international implementation.
World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) The World Business Council for Sustainable Development is an association of 140 global companies, which operates with the goal of striking a balance between economic growth and sustainability. E.ON AG has been working with the WBCSD at group-level since 2006, while E.ON UK has been actively involved in the WBCSD since the Council's founding.
World Energy Council (WEC) The World Energy Council (WEC) has around 100 national committees, uniting over 90 percent of the world's energy production industry. It therefore forms a representative platform for discussing long-term and global matters of energy technology, business and politics. E.ON uses the platform for exchanging experience internationally.
