Natural gas is gaining in importance in western Europe, and the number of gas customers has been steadily rising in all consumer sectors. Currently, natural gas makes up a quarter of Europe ’s total energy consumption. This is mainly due to the much higher use of gas in power plants in some countries, as well as the increased demand among industrial consumers. Two-thirds of the natural gas consumed in Europe is produced there, with approximately 85 % of western European extraction taking place in the three main gas-producing countries of the United Kingdom , Norway and the Netherlands .
