Gas

Natural gas - the cleanest-burning fossil fuel - is a comparatively recent addition to the energy mix. In just 30 years, though, its share of primary energy consumption has risen to about 22 percent. Residential usage and commercial usage each accounts for about half of Germany’s gas consumption. Industrial usage is on the rise, as this customer segment increasingly sees the advantages of natural gas.

As with electricity, E.ON also operates along the entire value chain in gas. E.ON Ruhrgas E&P is responsible for our gas exploration and production business. E.ON Ruhrgas is engaged in inter national gas procurement, gas wholesaling, and gas supply to large industrial customers across Europe. We supply gas to all other customer segments through our market units' energy retail  businesses. Through E.ON Gas Storage, we operate underground gas storage facilities with a total working gas capacity of about 9.4 billion cubic meters (5.6 billion cubic meters in Germany), enabling us to balance seasonal fluctuations in consumption and optimize our procurement. Through E.ON Gastransport, we operate and market an interregional gas pipeline system in Germany with a system length of 11,552 kilometers. Our gas distribution networks are operated by our regional utilities.

Natural gas is used primarily for space heating in homes and businesses and for industrial production processes, although it's increasingly used to generate electricity.
