Our Sustainability Effort in the Czech Republic
Sustainability is an integral part of our business strategy in the Czech Republic. We coordinate our sustainability activities through the Corporate Communications department of Brno-based E.ON Česká republika, the parent company for our Czech operations.
Our first responsibility is to maintain a safe and healthy workplace for our employees. To further enhance our safety performance, E.ON companies in the Czech Republic obtained international certification under ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 in 2012. In addition, we have a range of programs to promote our employees’ physical and mental health, particularly preventive measures such as free cancer screening and flu shots.
We’re committed to minimizing our impact on the environment. We’ve established procedures to reduce the amount of waste we produce and regularly monitor our performance in this area. Recent equipment upgrades have improved the climate performance of our fossil-fueled power plants. As is the case wherever we operate, our Czech network business takes great care not to harm landscapes or wildlife, particularly birds. Many of our transmission towers are fitted with special brackets that prevent birds from perching on energized components or with platforms on which birds can perch safely.
We also encourage our customers in the Czech Republic to live more sustainably. Our EnergiePlus+ web portal offers numerous energy-saving tips, and two power tariffs reward customers who reduce their electricity consumption. Each year we present Energy Globe Awards for ideas and projects that promote environmental protection and energy saving. We also provide financial support to selected events and publications that seek to raise environmental awareness.
Our community involvement effort focuses mainly on energy and environmental education for young people (for more information, click on “Award-winning After-school Activities”). We also provide grants to teenagers to enable them to obtain vocational training after school and during vacation. In addition, we sponsor selected organizations and events that enrich the cultural life in our service territory in Bohemia and Moravia.
