E.ON Russia has today officially commissioned two new units at its Surgutskaya GRES-2 power station. The new efficient CCGT units have a total capacity of 800 MW.

The official ceremony took place at the power station which is located in West-Sibiria. The ceremony was attended by Sergey Shmatko, RF Minister of Energy, Natalja Komarowa, Governor of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area Yugra, Dr. Bernhard Reutersberg, member of the E.ON AG Board of Management, and Sergey Tazin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of OAO E.ON Russia. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who attended the opening ceremony via teleconference, welcomed the participants and gave the command to start the new generation units, thereby honouring E.ON’s outstanding commitment in Russia.

Dr. Bernhard Reutersberg said: “Russia has been an important business partner of E.ON for almost 40 years. With the acquisition of the Russian power generator OGK-4 in 2007, E.ON is now one of the largest buyers of Russian gas but also the biggest foreign investor in the Russian power market. The commissioning of two new power units constructed using the most advanced technologies shows that we are committed to completely fulfilling our obligations on time - and to further developing our long-term relations with Russia. It is our contribution to the modernization of the Russian energy sector.”

Sergey Tazin commented: “The Commissioning of a further 800 MW at Surgutskaya GRES-2 is an important event for E.ON Russia. The new units’ efficiency together with the knowledge and talent of our specialists will strengthen E.ON’s leading position in the country’s thermal power industry.”

The new power units use the most advanced technology in Russia today and include the latest steam gas designs. Using this technology makes it possible to construct a power station which is compact.

The efficiency of each 400 MW CCGT unit of Surgutskaya GRES-2 is 55.9 percent, which is more than one third higher than the average efficiency of power units used in the Russian power industry.

The high efficiency of the new units is in line with E.ON’s strategy to produce cleaner & better energy. The total volume of capacities commissioned under E.ON Russia’s investment program is 2,400 MW. The total cost of the investment program is EUR2.8 billion.
