E.ON Carbon Sourcing is responsible for primary market activities - that is, buying carbon certificates (CERs/ERUs) directly from owners of certified emission reduction projects on a non guaranteed basis or generating them through their own project development activities. Our activities in the CO2 market are managed between the Carbon Sourcing unit of our Global Gas and Trading global units.
Our global trading unit is responsible for trading European emission allowances (EUAs) as part of the Emissions Trading Scheme and wholesale trading of CERs and ERUs on the secondary market, as well as trading in electricity, natural gas, coal, oil, freight and biomass.
In 2010, E.ON and Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company focused on renewable energy and sustainability, established the joint venture company E.ON Masdar Integrated Carbon (EMIC), which is focused on developing carbon emission reduction projects on the global market.
EMIC, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, capitalizes on the growth in the carbon market to monetize emission reductions resulting from improving the energy efficiency of industrial facilities. The company develops finance and implement projects in the Middle East, Africa and Asia with a particular focus on power generation and oil and gas.
