E.ON and Deutsche Telekom jointly develop solutions for smart homes

E.ON and Deutsche Telekom have today signed a cooperation agreement to develop the ‘home of the future’. The agreement, signed at the international IFA exhibition in Berlin, will see the two companies - and further partners - jointly develop services and products for smart homes. As a result, the energy sector will become more closely intergrated with household appliance, mobility and consumer electronics industries resulting in joined-up smart solutions for consumers.

E.ON will contribute its energy know-how to this partnership. The company already offers forward-looking energy solutions like funding programmes for small power generation systems in homes or smart meters combined with flexible electricity rates. E.ON will now systematically expand this range and bring new services and technologies to market maturity.

The joint platform of E.ON and Telekom provides an important base for this development. It is to form the standard for home electronics. For example, solar energy systems, fuel cells or small power generators of individual homes can be interlinked on this platform and their generating capacity pooled. This means that the combined capacity of these systems is virtually equivalent to a larger power station. Thus the systems not only supply each home but also, by feeding electricity into the public grid, help to ensure security of supply.

"E.ON and Deutsche Telekom, two leading companies in their respective sectors, are now pooling their capabilities. Energy and communications are moving closer together. As a result, we will be able to offer our customers convenient and efficient energy solutions, while at the same time contributing to reliable power grids for the future", said Urban Keussen, head of Technology & Innovation at E.ON.
